This species can be found west of the South American Andes, throughout Central America and in parts of Mexico. Certain localities top out at 3-5’ due to a locale-specific dwarf gene. However they are reasonably hardy, don’t get sick easily, have a ready feeding response, and possess a slender build between 5-7’ (1.5-2.1m) long on average. I disagree, simply because they are larger than most “easy” snakes, making them slightly more difficult to handle and much more difficult to house, requiring an enclosure that is both tall and wide. Some sources argue that it is one of the best beginner snakes a reptile enthusiast can have. The Central American Boa tends to be the most docile of the Boa genus, and is the most common species available in the pet trade. (You can refer to this CABI datasheet for details.) Widespread acceptance is still pending, but several publications have acknowledged the new name since the original research was published in 2009. imperator used to be classified as a subspecies of Boa constrictor until DNA sequencing identified imperator as a distinct genetic lineage with 5-7% sequence divergence from constrictor. constrictor.īoa imperator (Central American Boa/Common Boa)ī. melanogaster was recently reclassified as B. Specimens have been documented in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. constrictor is native to South America east of the Andes Mountains, particularly in the Amazon rainforest. constrictor average between 7-10’ (2.1-3.0m) - especially when allowed to grow slowly (read: naturally) rather than power-fed.ī. They have the potential to get up to 12’ (3.7m) long, but this is rare most B. Some localities also have a brown or dark brown tail instead of the namesake red, and they experience a color change as they age: from grayish babies to yellow and brown tones developing later. They typically have bat-shaped saddle patches with dark spots in between, although the Suriname locality has more of an hourglass shape to its pattern. constrictor is what most people think of when they hear the name: big, thick, and bright red patterning on the tail - although they tend to be much more docile than most assume. 8/9/2023 0 Comments Yahoo spades free online( Gepharts3d/Pixabay) How Yahoo! Games went from a small-time offering into a web conglomerate’s addiction play And that killer app was one that brought board games and card games back to life. By that point, Flash, then JavaScript, had completely replaced it.īut back in the ’90s it took a couple of years for a killer app to emerge. Java applets were novel and interesting-at least until they inevitably became bogged down by security issues, which doomed applets once and for all a few years ago. Oftentimes I don’t think they know what they mean.” “But sometimes they mean JavaScript, sometimes Java, sometimes applets. “People say, ‘We’re going to do this in Java,’” Swartzendruber told Hayes. One information consultant, Eli Lily’s John Swartzendruber, noted this created confusing situations at the office. It didn’t help, either, that other companies tried to borrow Sun’s nomenclature, most famously with Netscape’s creation of JavaScript six months after the initial release of Java applets, something Netscape also supported. That meant it was a lot for non-technical people to wrap their heads around. As ComputerWorld’s Frank Hayes noted in 1996, Sun Microsystems was trying to sell the web on Java applets at the same time it tried to sell a different form of software to businesses as a way to offer cross-platform applications. It was exciting technology, of course, but it was often confusing for users to keep up with it. "Anything that contributes to the health of the Internet contributes to Sun's health as well," Gosling told The New York Times in 1995. One key element of that trend: Sun made it free, in hopes that it could change the dynamic of the internet and break apart Microsoft’s monopoly. Java started a trend, one that other tools like Adobe’s Flash would soon follow. It was a cross-platform compiler at a time when most stuff was siloed off. The company created its own browser called HotJava, which was very limited except for the fact that it allowed for interactive “applets,” pieces of Java that could run in any web browser that supported them. Sun’s goal with Java was to create a language that was able to run on a variety of platforms, not just Windows PCs, and in that spirit, Java’s developers experimented with putting Java code directly into the browser. The graphics team at Sun was apparently a HotMess. Starting in 1991, Sun Microsystems began experimenting with a new kind of programming language designed specifically for interactive televisions, though when interactive TVs inevitably failed to generate heat, Sun and the language’s primary developer, James Gosling, moved the idea to the broader Web, which was just starting to grow.Ī screenshot from HotJava. But going back to around 1995 or so, it was genuinely exciting technology that blew a lot of minds. In recent years, the word “Java” has become something of an annoyance for web users because of its constant security issues. 8/9/2023 0 Comments Remove bronze patina“In my opinion, antique silverware and jewelry (excluding watches) are two of the only vintage categories that are alright for the layman to clean, but even here one has to be careful,” The Antique Sage advises. Additionally, cleaning painted wood can diminish authentic craquelure, or cracking. While polishes such as beeswax and carnauba wax condition wood, oils can do more harm than good. Removing it reduces both the desirability and value of the bronze by well over half.” Likewise, steer clear from shining old coins. “That brown or green-tinged brown finish is known as ‘ patination’ – and it’s key to value. “Fairly frequently on the Antiques Roadshow, we see a 19th century bronze that has been brought along by an owner in brilliantly bright condition, and then the owner proudly announces that they spent the last day cleaning it to make it bright and shiny,” says Mark Hill. Bronze and copper are among the materials to avoid cleaning. If in doubt, it’s a good rule of thumb to leave antiques alone. Cleaning them so they look like new defeats the purpose of owning a fine antique!” Which antiques should be cleaned, which should not? Wood Cabinets at Nashville Flea Market © Petticoat Junktion Many collectors want their old items to look old. Second, it can serve as a hallmark of authenticity. “First, it serves to protect an antique from further, undesirable corrosion. “ Patina is of paramount importance for antique collectors,” says The Antique Sage. Yet antiques with historic value should be left alone. Similarly, you may want to spruce up decorative pieces. It is okay to clean items used on a regular basis, like silverware. When it comes to cleaning, identify an antique’s purpose. Removing this ‘good wear’ can reduce the desirability and value of a piece of treen (and indeed furniture with great colour and patina) dramatically.” How to decide which antiques to clean? Flea Market Collection of Brass © HGTV “ This is particularly true of ‘treen’, small utilitarian and functional wooden pieces for the home made from the 16th to early 20th century. “With wooden antiques that have built up a ‘patina’ from being handled and used over long periods of time, take great care not to remove this surface effect as that will be highly desirable to a buyer in the future,” says Mark Hill, Member of The British Antiques Dealers’ Association, Head of Design at Dawsons Auctions, and EU & UK Director at RONATI. In fact, these materials acquire amber and honey shades that deepen their warmth and heirloom quality. Antique wood and leather age gracefully too. Patina is not only a signature of older metals. Plus, it is near impossible to replicate the richness of earth tones like the greenish blues and golden hues formed on copper and bronze. Although techniques artificially age new pieces in minutes, antiques gather genuine patina over decades. Taking a hand’s off approach can be beneficial. Do some materials look better if left untouched? Brimfield Flea Market © A Continuous Lean Since acids on the skin activate tarnish, wear gloves when handling objects. Or place sticks of schoolhouse chalk inside display cabinets to absorb sulfur and other filming gases. Easy, right! Store silver pieces in anti-tarnish bags and airtight boxes when not in use. Accordingly, limit contact with air and humidity to minimize tarnish. The longer materials such as silver, brass, copper, and cast iron are exposed to environmental elements, the more they collect patina and even rust. Oxidation, simply, results from exposure to air. Often, oxidation causes this green or black film commonly referred to as patina. Whether the goal is to make antiques shine or maintain their natural appeal, this guide covers how to clean antiques and when not to: Why do antiques lose their shine over time? Why Antiques Tarnish © Pinterestīeauty marks such as tarnish on metals and spots on mirrors can indicate an antique’s authenticity. Designers even use aging methods on newer items to create this sought-after character. Some antiques are better left untouched because it is this very patina that adds charm and value. For instance, “patina” is a characteristic developed over time. But is it always advisable to clean antiques? While cleansers can spruce up materials like wood, leather, silver and brass, cleaning may also shine away prized features. Knowing how to clean antiques can make or break cherished pieces. To polish or not to polish – that is the question for many antique collectors. 8/9/2023 0 Comments Types of pacman frogsIn breeding season, they use all their sounds to attract females. They can even croak to frighten enemies or just to respond to the noise. They can croak because of the availability of food or when eating. About six months after birth, they start to croak. The Pacman frogs communicate by quacking, squeaking, chirping, and, on rare occasions, yelling. But they can live longer in captivity, about 15 years. Their lifespan expectancy is approximately between 3 – 7 years. Depending on the food, they can reach maturity after 1 year or even 3 – 4 years. These juvenile frogs eat various diets, such as fish, worms, insects, and other creatures. In just a few weeks, they develop quickly and become little froglets. Tadpoles are also carnivorous and cannibalistic, and they will prey on each other if there is an opportunity. Within two weeks, the eggs hatch, and tadpoles arise. You should be careful when feeding or touching them. The bite is not poisonous but it can be painful! Moreover, they can suck your blood. Their teeth are also used to bite when the frogs are frightened or starving. These teeth, along with bony protrusions function as prison bars employed to lock the prey in their mouth. Pacman frogs are the only frogs that have both Maxillary and Vomerine teeth. The world holds a wonderful variety of frog species, each adapted to living in its unique habitat, be it cool mountain slopes, scorching deserts, or tropical rainforests. They are one of the only frogs with teeth It is reported that Pacman frogs suffocated themselves when attempting to do this. Instead of that, they consume their victim entirely, even though they are bigger than them. Their muscular legs allow them to practically launch their mouths at anything that crosses their way.ĭespite having powerful teeth and jaws, as well as a high bite force, they do not chew their prey. They can propel themselves with a length of 2-3 times their body to catch the larger prey. Any living thing that comes close enough to be grabbed will be consumed right away. To catch the prey, Pacman frogs use their sticky tongues to drag their prey into their huge mouths. Thanks to the fairly decent night vision, these creatures can attack other prey that moves around them. Pacman frogs are nocturnal, they’re most active at night and sleep during the day. When conditions are appropriate, it sheds the outer hard layer and continues eating and mating. This one-of-a-kind system keeps their inner skin moist. In the dormancy process, it sits absolutely still and reduces its metabolism. The Pacman frog protects itself with a tough hard external skin layer. If the surroundings become dry and cold, or there’s not enough source of food it hibernates. If the environment is too damp, its sticky skin prevents it from decomposition and infection. South American horned frogs have their own method to adapt to environment changes. Pacman frogs are well-adapted to the environment You may read some of the other Popular Exotic Pet articles for more information:Ĥ. It’s also the most common technique to tell Pacman frog’s gender. The difference in size between them explains why the females always want to consume the males. The adult size of male South American horned frogs is roughly 2 – 4 inches long, while the full size of females is between 4 – 7 inches long. Males are generally more colorful than females, while females are 2 times larger than males, as well as other typical frogs. The male frog fluctuates from dark green to a lime tint, whilst the female is tanner to fit in with the dead leaves. Their coloration and patterns create a perfect camouflage for them to do this. There is no set-price guarantee. These frogs enjoy burrowing in cool mud or staying amid the leaves on the forest ground, to wait for the prey and hide from predators (birds, bears, and snakes).
